SOMIC G810 Wireless Headset Review

Overview

SOMIC may be known for its solid range of gaming headsets and peripherals, but they’re rapidly becoming a contender in the wireless headset market too. Much like how many of their headsets offer feature-packed performance at attainable prices, the G810 continues this trend, delivering a lightweight, comfortable headset with gamer-focused audio tuning that has surprised me in all the right ways.

The SOMIC G810 is a triple-mode wireless headset supporting Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless, and wired connectivity via a 3.5mm jack, making it compatible with PC, PS5, PS4, Switch (when docked), laptops, and mobile phones. Lightweight, comfortable, and tuned for gaming, the G810 is a headset that could easily find a place in your setup.

I love some of the detail that has gone into the G810. Anyone familiar with SOMIC products will recognise the classic black finish with tasteful RGB accents that look fantastic and are very neatly done.

The G810 is framed almost exactly the same as many SOMIC headsets, with a slim, flexible, plastic-coated frame paired with a suspension ski-goggle-style headband rather than integrated padding. The frame is nothing special, but it’s clean, lightweight, and can withstand me twisting it and sitting on it with next to no issues (yes, I actually sat on my headset).

My one qualm with the frame’s general design is with the way it attaches to the cups. I have always loved a good amount of swivel in my headsets, as it allows for a better seal, reduces pressure on soft tissue, and generally improves the fit. The G810 has almost none, it is angled slightly and has a small amount of give, but it’s hardly enough for my personal taste. I can still feel that slight imbalance of pressure towards the back. This will always be subjective to each person, but I can imagine that this will only become more apparent the wider your head.

Working side by side with the frame is the suspension headband. I always used to dislike this style of headband; I hated messing with the ridiculous velcro attachment on some older headsets, but SOMIC has completely changed my opinion. The band replaces a head cushion, and rather than velcro, there are two multi-slot attachment points on each side. These headbands provide a great deal of comfort, distributing weight across a wider area and conforming to the shape of your head, unrestricted by the frame.

As an added bonus, the SOMIC headbands are often reversible with reversed colourways and patterns for a bit of personal flair. These bands work so well that I hope SOMIC convinces other brands to implement them too.

One last major pro I really have to give these bands is how well they have performed for me during VR sessions. I’ve found that wearing this style of headset with my Quest 2 makes for a much more comfortable experience during long sessions. The lightweight nature of the headset definitely doesn’t hurt this either.

Moving on to the cups, this is where 99% of the difference between higher-tier SOMIC models and the G810 lies. Design-wise, they are almost identical in shape, but the G810 does not feature RGB strips on the front. This is an easy way for SOMIC to reduce the price of the G810, and although I quite like RGB lighting, I can fully appreciate why it’s absent here. The flip-to-mute microphone on the G810 is fixed, meaning there is no physical mute button. As a result, the controls on the cups are limited to a charging port (USB Type-C), an ON/OFF button, and a volume dial.

Features and Controls

All controls are located on the left ear cup, and I found them very easy to locate and operate. I like how it only takes a single press to power on the G810, rather than a press and hold; it’s a minor quality-of-life improvement, but it’s one of those things that, once you try it, you wonder why it isn’t standard.

Having the mic mute easily accessible is a bonus, and although there is no visual indicator while using the headset, the position of the mic ensures you won’t accidentally leave your voice unmuted during a session.

The volume scroll wheel is smooth and doesn’t produce any crackle or static noise sometimes attributed to physical adjusters. It’s worth noting that the wheel adjusts the signal volume rather than the system volume.

Connectivity

Connectivity-wise, the G810 pairs automatically with the included USB dongle. Simply connect the dongle to your PC or PS4/5, power up the headset, and it will automatically connect. The G810 uses SOMIC’s reliable wireless technology, and I’ve had no latency issues, with the freedom to walk around my flat without dropouts.

Simply connect the dongle to your PC or PS4/5, power up the headset, and it will automatically connect.

Bluetooth connectivity is straightforward, although there is no multipoint support, meaning you will need to disconnect or move out of range to pair with a different device. Realistically, most users won’t be frequently switching devices, but it’s worth mentioning.

Charging is handled via USB-C (cable included), with fairly fast charging times and up to 50 hours of playback, which is excellent. I can’t dispute the battery life here, as I’ve only charged the headset once and have yet to run out during my regular sessions.

Audio Quality

The most significant difference, however, is one you can’t see. While premium SOMIC headsets may have PRO drivers that absolutely slap, the G810 uses a non-PRO driver variety. Although you might think it wouldn’t make much difference, it really does, as when compared side by side, the G810 feels slightly muted and less vibrant compared to its flashier siblings. By no means does this mean the G810 underperforms it absolutely holds its own,but in a direct comparison, the PRO drivers take the edge.

SOMIC G810 Audio Quality

The audio is fairly good overall. It has a decent sound quality, but it doesn’t feel as alive as higher-end models. The drivers feel somewhat flatlined, almost as if a piece of foam has been placed in front of them. This becomes most noticeable during loud moments with a lot happening, where the audio can get muddied and lack the punch you might want.

The soundstage is decent but not outstanding. If I didn’t have multiple SOMIC headsets to compare, I would likely feel more satisfied, as the G810’s sound quality is still very good for its price bracket. When the price gap is minimal between the G810 and higher-tier models, you might consider spending a little more if you value richer audio.

The microphone, on the other hand, is excellent. SOMIC appears to have addressed issues present in older models, and I can confidently say that the mic on the G810 is clear and reliable. One slight downside, depending on your preference, is that sidetone is not enabled by default and requires the companion app to adjust.

The earcups are dual-layered with memory foam, finished in a sport-like fabric, providing excellent comfort and solid noise isolation. They don’t quite match leatherette in isolation, but they remain breathable, reduce sweat, and work well with glasses, which many leatherette designs do not.

Battery Life

Battery life is rated up to 50 hours, which is more than enough for several days of use for all but the most dedicated gamers. Charging is relatively quick, even from a PC or console USB port, with a full charge easily lasting a week of regular gaming.
